Doug Broad

Hey! I’m Doug Broad, a personal fitness trainer at The Gym MPLS. I have been a trainer in this industry since 1986.

I grew up in Fairbanks Alaska and while attending my freshman year at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks I got a job working the front desk and selling memberships at the farthest north Gold’s Gym for $4.50/hour.  One day a member approached me and asked if I would train him for $10.00/hour.  I did and I was hooked!

I moved to Los Angeles in 1989 and spent the next 4 1/2 years working at gyms in Woodland Hills, Camarillo, and Newhall as a personal trainer, fitness director, and management.

In 1994 I moved to Minneapolis and got hired at The Regency Athletic Club and Spa in the Hyatt Hotel.  I ran the personal training department there for 12 years and also served as a consultant with Body Balance, a subcontractor specializing in programs aimed at lifestyle changes in clinically obese individuals.

In 2006 I was offered a position as the Director of Fitness Management for Foley & Mansfield, a law firm headquartered in Minneapolis with offices in cities around the country.  I trained staff and their family members in our 2000 sq ft gym, as well as training staff remotely in our other offices nationwide, oversaw multiple fitness and weight loss challenges, and provided nutritional counseling and motivation. I got paid to torture lawyers!

After 14 years I lost my job due to the COVID pandemic.  There was no one in the office thus no one in the gym so the law firm made the difficult decision to permanently close their fitness center in August 2020.  And that is what brought me to The Gym MPLS!

I have competed on and off in natural bodybuilding competitions over the past several decades.  I placed 3rd in the lightweight division at the 1988 Mr. Alaska, 1st in the bantamweight division at the 1995 Minnesota Classic Natural, and 4th in the men’s Masters division at both the 2012 and the 2016 Mr. Natural Minnesota.

Strength and functional training have had a tremendous impact on my life, both personally and professionally, and can be life-altering for you as well.  Hit me up and let’s build a better you!
